1. iPhone X style gestures
Perhaps the biggest change to Apple’s 2017 iPhone X was the removal of the home button. Apple sidelined the button, which had been present in every model of the iPhone previously, to allow for more screen space. While the majority of high-end Android phones don’t have a button on the home screen, Android has updated its user interface and added new gestures to make it easier for manufacturers to create bezel-less devices.
Android’s three navigation icons at the bottom of the phone have been replaced by one digital button, located in the centre of the screen. Swipe up and you’ll get to the last app you had open, a long-press will get you Google Assistant and swiping horizontally will let you scroll through open apps. Instead of the back button being permanently in view, Android now only shows it when its an option for the user. The option can be reversed in Android’s settings but is a big change in how you’ll use your device.
2. Privacy Extremely Enhanced
A lot of security and privacy settings have been induced into Android Pie. The biggest security feature is the new restriction system when an app becomes idle for sensors, cameras, and microphones All these systems stop working automatically, any another app requesting all these information does not get anything from these sources.
Google has suggested that they will no longer provide background access to any language since these features will not work anymore. Google has enabled encryption for backups, they will also provide a client-side secret and per-network randomization of MAC addresses, but these features will be applied in the full version of Android Pie. With this, now a better fingerprint access system will be included in individual apps.
3. Indoor positioning with Wi-Fi RTT
There’ll be no more getting lost in supermarkets or shopping centres on the weekends. Android 9 adds platform support for the IEEE 802.11mc Wi-Fi protocol—also known as Wi-Fi Round-Trip-Time (RTT)—to let you take advantage of indoor positioning in your apps.

For this Android, Pie has taken the help of WiFi Round-Trip-Time (RTT). With the help of 802.11mc of RTT apps. If location sharing is activated, Android pie can measure distances to certain Wi-Fi points and by using data from three points can pinpoint your location to around one metre of accuracy.
4. App Actions
This is a very new feature in which the OS can predict itself above the user’s app usage, and you will be able to take further action. This app can cancel predictions.
5. Android Dashboard
It is designed to understand the habits of the user, which can provide you with meaningful engagement. It can show you how many times you unlock your phone, how many notifications you received, how many apps you used. With it, it gives you control over how and when you are spending your time.
6. App Timer
This feature gives you control over how long you want to use your apps, at the end of time, they provide you with the notification. This is going to be very important for those people who want to make the right use of their time.
7. Shush Gesture
Shush is a new gesture to activate Do Not Disturb — by turning your phone screen-down on a flat surface, you’ll put your phone into the mode automatically. Android P will also allow users to set Starred Contacts, people whose messages will get through to you even if your phone is in Do Not Disturb mode.
8. Wind Down Mode
Wind Down is an automatic Do Not Disturb mode designed to help wean users who lose hours of sleep from the addictive glow of their smartphones. In this feature, you just have to tell the Google Assistant about your time of sleep and when the time comes, their phone will start fading to grayscale, making it more difficult to see and encouraging them to shut their phones off. Grayscale is also less stimulating for the brain, meaning users aren’t as likely to want to say on their phone. Wind Down automatically reverts to normal mode in the morning.
9. A new way of screenshot
Holding both the power button and volume button on Android phones has always been a fiddly way to take screenshots. Google has now simplified the process. Holding only the power button for a couple of seconds now gives three options: power off, restart and screenshot. A simple tap on the last of these saves whatever is on a screen to your device.

Now many phone manufacturers are shortening the bezels, from which front-facing sensors are leaving the notch on the display of your phone, Android 9 offers support for the latest edge-to-edge screens that contain display cutouts for cameras and speakers. The Display Cutout lets you find out the location and shape of the non-functional areas where content shouldn’t be displayed. 11. Faster Android Runtime
(ART) in this new operating system is too fast compared to its previous OS. On devices running Android 9 or higher, the Android runtime (ART) ahead-of-time compiler further optimizes compressed Dalvik Executable format (DEX) files by converting the DEX files in an app package into a more compact representation.
As new OSs come in, their ART is being improved in such a way that makes apps better and faster. With this change allows your app to start faster and consume less disk space and RAM. This improvement particularly benefits low-end devices with slower disk I/O speeds.
12. Revamped design
Google has not explicitly said this but leak images are giving the impression that Google has made a lot of changes in designing in its new operating system. Where some major changes such as showing the time on the left side of the screen, being more symmetrical of notches and the settings menu being more colourful. Google has also made significant changes in its Notification settings so that the user can easily make use of it. In the new update, image attachments and stickers are placed in the notification, where only the first name of the person was visible. With this, they have given the option to the Users so that they can add features such as quick replies like you have seen in Google Allo and Google Reply app. It is still unclear how much control the user will get in these. 14. Multi-Camera support
Multi-camera facilities are already available in many Android phones where the cameras are both front or back. But there are very few phones where you can use your cameras simultaneously. In this new update, Google is adding a new API, so the user can explore this facility more and use multiple cameras together. By doing so, they can use many effects such as depth-sensing magic, Apple-style live portrait mode, overlay two images, etc. Which were not available in earlier standard phones. With this, Google is now going to add support for apps, so that the features of image stabilization and display-based flash can be found in the primary camera of your phone.
15. Having more media support
Now Android P native will support HDR VP9 Profile 2 codec, from which they will deliver deliverable HDR video from YouTube, Play Movies, etc. With this, it supports High-Efficiency Image Format (HEIF), which is a modern JPEG alternative, which is already being used in iOS. AI smarts Android Pie needs more of your data, but the tradeoff is it’s smarter than previous versions. The operating system has an adaptive battery and adaptive brightness modes. Using Google’s machine learning it collects data on the times you use certain apps and when you change the brightness of the device. Android Pai launched as a public beta on 8 May 2018 As of now these updates will be available only on Pixel phone.
Android P: Can You Download It?
Google has since announced the consumer-ready version of the software is available for all Pixel and Essential phones as an over-the-air update. Some features, like Digital Wellbeing, still aren’t ready, so you’ll need to join the new beta – after installing Android 9 Pie on your Pixel – to play with them. Google said those features won’t arrive for Android One handsets and other devices until later this year.
